Met Announces 2009-2010 Schedule
Met premieres of
- Rossini’s Armida (a Mary Zimmerman production under Riccardo Frizza with Renee Fleming)
- Verdi’s Attila (featuring the Met Debut of Riccardo Muti)
- Janáček’s From the House of the Dead (in a production by Patrice Chereau, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen),
- Shostakovich’s The Nose (Gergiev conducting a production by William Kentridge, starring that guy from the latest South Pacific revival)
Along with many interesting performers in returning productions. One that particularly interests me is a Lulu with Marlis Peterson in the title role, James Morris as Schön/Jack and Anne Sophie von Otter as Countess Geschwitz.
Carnegie Hall concerts: The December 20 concert, conducted by Levine, features Stephanie Blythe in Elgar’s Sea Pictures song cycle, followed by Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. On January 24, Levine again conducts, with Diana Damrau as soloist in a program consisting of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished”), selected Lieder by Richard Strauss and “Grossmächtige Prinzessin” from his opera Ariadne auf Naxos, and Beethoven Symphony No. 5. On May 16, Pierre Boulez conducts Bartók’s The Wooden Prince and Schoenberg’s Erwartung, with Deborah Polaski as soloist.
The sad:
Falling to the budget ax are productions of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District, Die Frau Ohne Schatten, and The Ghosts of Versailles won’t be happening.
