Design for a New Music Player at NNM
Besides the things we've been talking about incessantly, I thought I'd mentioned a few other things I'm going to try and do with the site.Elsie's been trying to get me to make the logo less (ahem) authoritarian... what I'm thinking is that the top space where there's the NetNewMusic giant logo is going to be a big piece of Flash. It'll be a networked graph of each NNM artist. THIS will be the focus for the site.

You can play with a prototype here. Try Layouts/Radial or Distortions.
It'll be a map of artists that you'll surf by just moving the mouse. Each node will move around as if a fish-eyed lens was over it, and they'll be able to be sorted in a variety of ways with buttons on the top, alphabetical, by genre, other tags. When you hover over a node for more than a few seconds, the artist's music will start playing in a side panel - and you'll see the playlist. If you click - it'll freeze on that artist and you can jump around the playlist. If you right-click on the artist, it'll jump to the next piece in the playlist. The playlist and the player will appear on the right with the nodes animating towards the left.
The focus of NetNewMusic has always been listening. I think this graph thingamadoodle will be an awesome way to surf NNM's musical spaces.
