Ildikó Vékony

Very sad news from our NNM friend Adam Kondor: His ex-wife (and his son's mother) Ildikó Vékony died in a fall while rock-climbing (something she loved to do). She was 46.

Ildikó was one of the world's premiere cimbalom players (in Adam's own words "She was the best cimbalom player in Hungary, and for classical music probably the best all over the world - not many people play Bach on cimbalom"), and a composer in her own right. She's featured on all kinds of major recordings, and had worked with everyone from Kurtag to Ligeti to Eötvös (in fact she was soloist just last January in NYC at Zankel Hall, in a concert led by Eötvös).

Here is her biography from the Budapest Music Centre:

Here you can listen her playing something Adam wrote for her (one of 6 Sonatas in late-18th century style):

Some photos (of and by her)

It's a terrible loss and terrible pain, Adam, that I'm sure every one of this little community of musicians feels.
