Composer FAIL!

This last weekend I was in Kansas City for Electronic Music Midwest. I had a great time and I will regale you with stories in the future.  My flight back to Detroit was WAY too early.  Taking off at 6:10 AM meant catching a cab at 4:30.  That wouldn’t be so bad except I caroused until past 1 AM.  Groggy and low on nutrients, I boarded the plane and was in the last row.

Seated next to me, across the aisle, was a gentleman with a cello.  He was also groggy, as was everyone on the flight.  I chatted with him a bit and found out he was Christopher Costanza of the St. Lawrence String Quartet. The quartet had played a concert in KC the night before and was heading to a concert in Ann Arbor that afternoon.

It took me a few minutes to register who I was talking to.  Then it hit me: oh, the same St. Lawrence String Quartet for whom John Adams wrote his string quartet? The St. Lawrence String Quartet that I reviewed on a Naxos recording about a year ago? I should have done the composer thing and pimped my music.  I have a string quartet that is, all told, pretty cool. Not to mention I also wrote some really beautiful music for cello and piano in the last year.  I didn’t mention any of these things.  Too tired and slightly hung over, I at least admitted to Christopher that I SHOULD be doing these thing but just didn’t have the energy so early.

We exchanged business cards, though.  I’ll probably send my scores to him.  Maybe I didn’t fail as much as I thought I did.
