Ilya Hoffman was born in Moscow in 1977. Studied at Moscow Special Gnessins School of Music in class of Prof. Elena Ozol. Graduated from Moscow State Conservatory, class of Prof. Yuri Bashmet, associate Prof. Roman Balashov.

At present time Ilya Hoffman is a post-graduate student at Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow (prof. Yuri Bashmet) and a teacher at Gnessins music school of music.

Studied composition under tutelage of his father, composer Leonid Hoffman, follower of the Second Viennese School, pupil of Philip Herschkowitz who himself was a student of Alban Berg and Anton Webern.

Ilya Hoffman, as violist and as a composer has participated in such festivals as: Moscow Autumn Festival; Oleg Kagan Memorial; Arnold Schoenberg international fest; "Evenings of American Music"; "Music forum to mark the 1700th anniversary of the Christianization of Armenia"; Maria Yudina commemoration; "World Viola Fest." In Kronberg, "The Plush-fest" in London, "Mozartiana" festival, and others.

Hoffman also initiated and organized several significant cultural events, such as: Memorial concert, September 11 commemoration, at the Grand Hall of Moscow Sate Concervatory supported the US Embassy, "Evenings Of American Music" Fest., Arnold Schonberg's death 50th anniversary, Jubilee of Antonin Dvorak etc.

Hoffman has collaborated and performed with internationally known musicians among them: Alexei Lubimov, Natalia Gutman, Kolya Blaher, Edward Brunner, Mikhail Muntian, Alexander Rudin, Alexei Utkin, Vladimir Ponkin, Vladimir Tonkha, Adrian Brendel, Kirill Rybakov, Alexander Trostiansky, Yuri Polubelov and others.

He regularly plays in a duo with a remarkable pianist Sergey Koudriakov and performs a lot as a soloist with orchestras and as a chamber musician.

In October 2004, Hoffman, together with Sergey Koudriakov, recorded a CD for Azzurra Music (Italy) with masterpieces of Schubert, Schumann and Schostakovich.
