Michele Selva was born in San Marino in 1974 and in 1999 he is Doctor with full marks from the "Bruno Maderna" Conservatory of Music in Cesena. Besides music activity, among his interests are also humanities and musicology. Indeed, he graduated in philosophy with a thesis on musical dramaturgy on the 20th century theatre music. He regularly performed concert activity with various chamber groups and participated several times in the concert and theatre seasons of the Bonci Theatre in Cesena. At the same time, he performed solo and concert activity with the Military Band of the Republic of San Marino and with other musical and symphonic ensembles, such as the Symphonic Orchestra of the "Bruno Maderna" Conservatory of Music and the San Marino Symphonic and Chamber Orchestra. In 1994 he took part in the master class of the French saxophonist C. Delangle in Perugia. In 1994, 1995 and 1999 he participated in various national courses and studies on saxophone at the Conservatories of Music of Fermo and Milan. In 2000 he also participated in a master class in Macerata curated by M. Mazzoni and J. M. Londeix, historical and outstanding representative of classical saxophone. Particularly attentive to the developments of the 20th century and contemporary music, he included in his repertoire the majority of the most recent original pieces written for his instrument and participated in various first performances by some fundamental and young Italian composers, among whom S. Bussotti, G. Cappelli, G. Dazzi, F. Festa, A. Guarnieri, M. Lauricella, M. Messieri, J. Torres Maldonado. In 2002, while plying the Sonata by E. Denisov in a duet with pianist D. Giovannini, he was selected by composer K. Huber in person to take part in Musica Insieme Panicale, a music festival boasting among its participants some of the most distinguished representatives of today’s musical panorama, such as V. Globokar, U. Brand, H. Schneeberger. In the 2004 he founds, with the composer Massimiliano Messieri, the Duo Messieri/Selva (saxophone and live electronics). He was invited to various national conservatories of music and to the IX Stage Internazionale del Sassofono, where he held conferences and master classes on the 20th century music and, in particular, on the production for saxophone by Giacinto Scelsi. Moreover, in 2005 and 2006, by taking turns with S. Bussotti, he held two conferences-concerts dedicated to contemporary music at the IULM University in Milan and subsequently he taught for the School of Semiotics of Music at the Department of Communication of the University of San Marino. He performed concerts and recitals both in Italy and abroad: Copenaghen, Hamburg, Kromeriz (Forfest Festival), Leipzig (Heiling-Kreuz-Kirche and Westwerk-Spinnerei), Oldenburg (oh ton Festival), Weimar (for the Italian Institute of Culture in Berlin), Dresden (at the Regional Parliament of Sachsen) and Prague (at the prestigious Martinu Hall of the Music Academy). Recently, also in collaboration with M. Messieri, he has focused his attention on the thought and production of original pieces by J. Cage. He realised a "first radio performance" and "on line" by Ryoanji in the version for saxophone, percussion and magnetic tape. In January 2006, with original pieces by John Cage, he closed the conference "Il Pensiero della Musica" organised by Lucrezia De Domizio Durini at the Piantagione Paradise of J. Beuys in Bolognano (PE) and always in 2006, in Genoa, at the presence, among others, of an enthusiastic Edoardo Sanguineti, he performed an important "Italian premiere" of One7 for saxophone and electronic accompaniment. He is Professor of saxophone at the Musical Institute of the Republic of San Marino.
