BIOGRAPHY
Marilyn Nonken has emerged as one of the most gifted young musicians dedicated to the modern and contemporary repertoires. Upon her 1993 New York debut, she was heralded as "a determined protector of important music" (New York Times). Recognized as "one of the greatest interpreters of new music" (American Record Guide), she regularly is named “Best of the Year” by some of the nation’s leading critics (Boston Globe, 1997-2002, and Washington Post, 2005).
Ms. Nonken's performances have been presented by Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, IRCAM, Theâtre Bouffe du Nord, the ABC (Australia), Guggenheim Museum, the Rockefeller Foundation, Kettle's Yard, Cleveland Museum of Art, the Menil Collection/DaCamera of Houston, Smithsonian Institution, Miller Theatre, Phillips Collection, Logos, and universities and conservatories around the world. Composers who have written for her include Milton Babbitt, Mario Davidovsky, Chris Dench, Pascal Dusapin, Jason Eckardt, Michael Finnissy, and Tristan Murail, as well as a host of emerging American voices. She has toured with the complete piano music of Boulez, Murail, and Schoenberg and been presented in the U.S., France, Canada, Denmark, Australia, Italy, the Czech Republic, England, Belgium, and the Netherlands. She plays with Ensemble 21 (the New Music group of which she is Artistic Director and a co-founder), the Group for Contemporary Music, and Elision (Melbourne/Sydney); she has also been presented by MusicNOW (Chicago Symphony), the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Network for New Music, Chamber Music Now!, the Mid-American Center for Contemporary Music, and Speculum Musicae. Festival appearances include Résonances and the Festival d'Automne (both, Paris), Aspects des Musiques d’Aujourd-hui (Caen), New Music Days (Ostrava), Musikhost (Odense), When Morty Met John (New York), Works and Process (New York), Piano Festival Northwest (Portland), Music on the Edge (Pittsburgh), and the William Kapell International Piano Festival and Competition (College Park, MD). A highlight of her 2007-2008 season is the premiere and recording of David Rakowski’s Piano Concerto, written for her, with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
Ms. Nonken's discography features recordings on Tzadik, New World Records, Innova, Mode, Lovely Music, Albany, Metier, Divine Art, and CRI. "American Spiritual," a CD of works written for her, was released in 2001; other solo discs include “Morton Feldman: Triadic Memories” and “Tristan Murail: The Complete Piano Music”. Recent chamber releases include Charles Wuorinen’s “Adapting to the Times” (with ‘cellist Fred Sherry) and Louis Karchin’s “Voyages” (with saxophonist Taimur Sullivan). Forthcoming releases will feature the music of William Albright, Chris Dench, Brian Ferneyhough, and David Laganella.
A student of David Burge at the Eastman School, Ms. Nonken received a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Her writings have been published in Perspectives of New Music, Agni, Current Musicology, and the Journal of the Institute for Studies in American Music. She also guest edited "Performers on Performance," a special issue of Contemporary Music Review.
Currently Director of Piano Performance Studies at New York University's Steinhardt School, Ms. Nonken is a Steinway Artist.
