S21 List of Most Influential Works Since 1970

submitted by Lawrence Dillon

Over the course of a month in the spring of 2005, I solicited suggestions from Sequenza21 readers for the most influential compositions of the last 35 years. The results went way beyond what any one of us could have projected, and although there are some obvious flaws, the list pretty accurately reflects the diversity and scope of the new music scene. I didn't editorialize the suggestions, only leaving out the pieces that I couldn't confirm came from the 1970-2005 period under discussion.

There is, of course, one hidden shortcoming to this list -- nobody suggested any works of their own!
